Marsh Harbour, the largest town in the Abacos, is a strategic place from which to explore the calm seas and secluded cays surrounding Great Abaco and Little Abaco islands. It also offers a larger variety of shops and amenities than surrounding areas. The Abacos feature beaches, old colonial towns, friendly locals and one of the tallest sand dunes in The Bahamas, with sublime views of a seven-mile long beach below.

It’s easy to get around Marsh Harbour; it only has one traffic light! And there’s plenty to see, from an organic health and beauty products maker to the docks of town, where you’ll meet up with boaters from around the world. Then there’s Great and Little Abacos islands, where around every turn and down every path you’ll find a quiet cove, beach or cay. Take a boat out to Elbow or Green Turtle Cay and explore the colonial past. Bikes and scooters are a preferred mode of transportation for exploring and are easily rented.

  • Blue Marlin rents golf carts, Cat’s Paw rents boats, or find bikes at Rental Wheels.
  • Boat tours are available just about everywhere, but Bahamas Naturalist Expeditions gets you to unusual and interesting places like the parrot forest.

Marsh Harbour has been a major boating destination for centuries. It’s the centralized spot for charters to help you sail, power through or camp out on the seas in just the right craft. Scuba divers will have a tough time choosing which wrecks, reefs and caves to explore. Mermaid Reef and Beach and The Pelican Cays Land and Sea Park offers exceptional snorkeling conditions, including shallow reefs and brilliantly-colored marine life. Fishing of every type is a big deal in the Abacos; summer tournaments are held here with record catches. Charter a boat and an expert skipper to take you to the sweetest spots, or try your own luck.

  • Just a few of the great services are Local Boy Deep Sea Fishing, DiveTime Abacos and Cruise Abaco.
  • Golfers can try their luck at The Abaco Club and Treasure Cay golf courses.

You’ll find boutiques and shops in Marsh Harbour alongside the Bay Street waterfront. Look for flavorful locally-roasted coffee, locally-made bakery goodies and straw market crafts in small towns around the Abacos islands.

  • John Bull is a traditional, old English style luxury brands house. Not for the faint of heart.
  • Donnie Wood or Native Creations offer a variety of souvenirs and gifts.

You will not go hungry in Marsh Harbour. The choices of restaurant, cafes and bakeries are astounding, though with all the boaters coming in from sailing, it’s understandable that they’re looking for some good food. So, the landlubbers benefit!

  • Wally’s, Oasis, Jib Room and Mangoes get a lot of mentions on social media.
  • For island flavors, try Back 2 Da Island and Da Bes Yet Bakery.
