Marsh Harbour, the largest town in the Abacos, is a strategic place from which to explore the calm seas and inviting cays surrounding Great Abaco and Little Abaco island. It also offers a bigger variety of shops and facilities than surrounding areas. Lodging choices include cozy inns and full-service resorts like Abaco Beach Resort & Marina.

You’ll see Elbow Cay’s 1863 Hope Town Lighthouse on every Bahamian ten-dollar bill – and in far more vivid, candy-striped detail when you view it in person. Climb the 101 steps 89 feet up to enjoy the panoramic view. About 30 miles south of Marsh Harbour is Pete Johnston’s Foundry, located in Little Harbour. Pete and Margot Johnston are internationally-known artists and sculptors whose works are sold in respected U.S. art galleries. You can buy many of their pieces at the Foundry, plus learn about how they and their three sons arrived on the island in 1951 aboard an old schooner and lived inside a local cave until building their land dwelling. Consider booking one of the guided island tours to see a whole other side most visitors miss: rare Abaco parrots; beautiful wild horses; more than 100 blue holes and the ruins of Marsh Harbour’s past.

As part of Great Abaco Island, Marsh Harbour has been a major boating destination for centuries. It’s the centralized spot for charters to help you sail, power through or camp out on the seas in just the right craft. Scuba divers will have a tough time choosing which wrecks, reefs and caves to explore. Mermaid Reef and Beach and The Pelican Cays Land and Sea Park offers exceptional snorkeling conditions, including shallow reefs and brilliantly-colored marine life. Fishing of every type is a big deal in the Abacos: summer tournaments are held here with record catches. Charter a boat and expert skipper to take you to the sweetest spots or try your own luck. Continue your adventure on land, where you can hike or bike your way through unspoiled pine forest and kayak through the mangroves.

You’ll find boutiques and shops in Marsh Harbour alongside the Bay Street waterfront. Look for flavorful locally-roasted coffee, locally-made bakery goodies and straw market crafts in small towns around the Abacos islands.

Marsh Harbour’s Island Bakery has a reputation for the tastiest, fresh-baked Bahamian bread and cinnamon rolls. Wally’s dinner cuisine gets many positive reviews. Or stroll through downtown Marsh Harbour to see the full variety of casual to gourmet choices.

You can find sports bars, pubs, live music and other entertainment, mostly at the Marsh Harbour marinas and hotel bars. Try Curly Tails for live music on weekends or DnR Sports Bar for pool, darts and big-screen TVs.
